Virtual Tour History

In 1787, artist Robert Barker created a 360° panorama by painting onto a cylindrical surface and viewed from the inside. The word panorama was first used on the 11th of June, 1791.

On the 29th of December, 1900, Louis Lumière filed a patent for the Photorama, the first panoramic photography process allowing the projection into a circular space of a single frame to recreate a complete 360° view.

The projection of the 360° view was successful because Louis Lumière applied the Cinematograph shutter principles to his device. From February 1902 to spring 1903, over 600 panoramic photographs were taken and projected before the public in Paris, in a venue measuring 20 metres in diameter. These panoramic images held the promise of reinventing the trend for pictorial panoramas from the end of the 18th century. At the end of the 19th century, 360 photography was born by assembling multiple photos to create a single 360° photo. One of the first online virtual tour viewers was Apple QuickTime.

In January 2020, Klapty finally made virtual tours accessible to everyone in the entire world.
