In Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, the present is woven intricately with its history. Saint Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral was inaugurated in 2001 to celebrate 1,700 years of nationhood. The nearby 9.5-meter-high monument of General Andranik Ozanian, a key figure in the Armenian liberation movement of the late 1800s and early 1900s, was inaugurated in December 2002.
