Dilum Coppens

Dilum Coppens (°1993) graduated with a MFA from LUCA School of Arts, Brussels in 2018. He currently works and lives in Brussels, Belgium.

In his artistic practice, Coppens searches for the foundation of creation, both mental and physical, which for him forms the basis for our humanity. We shape and master our world through physical creation. Through mental creation, we give meaning to life place ourselves in our existence. These two forms cannot exist independently of each other. One is what we make, the other is why we make it.

Mental creation is explored through the arbitrary use of words and images. These media, with which we try to comprehend and describe our world, are brought together not through intention but through intuition so that their fixed meaning disappears. In this way, the spectators can form their own interpretation and become aware of their own mental creation process.

Underneath this layer of meaning, physical creation is also explored through the medium in itself and the emphasis on materiality. Paint is thoughtlessly applied to the canvas, plaster is molded into an arbitrary shape, digital images are manipulated by the errors of the computer. It looks at the foundation of what an image and object is: color, shape, and texture.

Like our world, the works simply remain what they are: empty words, objects or images, until the viewer assigns their meaning to them.

Through this process, Coppens creates works that resemble artifacts from an ancient yet at the same time contemporary culture that shared our world, but not our context. It is as if our future society discovered our present-day Stonehenge: they do not know its full meaning, but they understand and feel that it is, nonetheless, there.
