How is it possible to alter a space without a major construction project? Amie Adelman does it using cup hooks, thread and mathematical formulas. With these simple tools she changes our perception of a space. Adelman thinks beyond the usual constraints of a person working with textiles. Her projects start with a mathematical 3D model using descriptive geometry that guides her thread by thread. The form is built in a process which is repetitive but at the same time meditative. After completion, viewers are enveloped by the form. Adjusting the lighting to create shadows that move and change over the course of the day activates the piece. It never looks quite the same from hour to hour. A professor at the University of North Texas in Denton, TX, Adelman has spent time studying historic and contemporary textile techniques in Africa, Europe and South America. This has given her a variety of resources for use in both her teaching and her work creating textile structures. Pamela Becker
