“Companion Species (At What Cost): The Works of Marie Watt” spotlights two monumental tapestries assembled from panels of cloth embroidered during sewing circles, an activity central to Watt’s artistic practice; the 16-½ -foot-long Companion Species (At What Cost); and, the 17-½-foot-long Companion Species (Calling All My Relations). n nThe show also includes textile works that emphasize Indigenous teaching and what Watt calls Iroquois protofeminism - the recognition of Indigenous matriarchies and Indigenous ecological traditions of deep interconnections between people and the Earth. n nThis exhibition furthermore features wall text prompts composed in collaboration with Watt that invite the viewer to consider some decolonizing ideas brought by her artwork and also by her community engagement practices, including one that reads, “what would our world look like if we considered ourselves a companion species?”
