The elevated, angular structure of Sankofa’s Sanctuary resembles the tall, elegant body and folded wings of a crane. There are 15 different species within Gruidae, the family that cranes belong to, which can be found around the world. Five types of cranes, including the grey crowned cranes, are abundant in the wetlands and grasslands of East and Southern Africa, from Kenya and Uganda to South Africa and Zimbabwe. East Asia is home to eight species of cranes, including the red crowned cranes, which are common in Japan. Cranes play a vital role in the health of the ecosystems where they live but are increasingly facing endangerment. Ten of the fifteen species are currently threatened with extinction. From cultures in East and Southern Africa to Japan and China, cranes are symbols of good fortune, happiness, and long life. The bird’s connection to both Japanese and African cultures echo the inspiration behind Sankofa’s Sanctuary’s framework and storytelling.
