In both its design and intention, Harriet’s Hut bears a striking resemblance to a mighty baobab tree. Scientifically known as Adansonia, the baobab tree originated on the island of Madagascar over 20 million years ago. Over time, the seeds blew across the ocean and took root in mainland Africa. Baobabs now grow in savannah ecosystems across the eastern and southern regions of the African continent, where local cultures often perceive the tree as a symbol of life. The fruit found in the pods on baobab trees is pounded into a powder and used in drinks, food, and medicine, coveted for its mineral-rich properties including vitamin C, iron, and potassium. The wide trunk of the baobab—strong and sturdy—and the intricate network of branches extending upwards are reminiscent of the structure of Harriet’s Hut. The off-grid cabin was built with the intention of self-sufficiency and endurance, much like baobab trees. Their root systems extend up to 50 feet deep in the ground, allowing them to store large amounts of water and stay hydrated in arid conditions. Like the mighty baobab, Harriet’s Hut is strongly rooted in its African origins. The name is a nod to the formidable Harriet Tubman, while the interior integrates elements of African design. And like the tree of life, Harriet’s Hut offers a functional, protective, and healing space for guests seeking a respite in nature.
