My third and last instalment in Portugal is a four-picture tour of the Pena Palace on top of a hill in the Sintra Mountains. On a clear day it can be seen from Lisbon. It started as a chapel in the Middle Ages following an apparition of the Virgin Mary that was destroyed by the Lisbon earthquake in 1755. It was rebuilt as a fairy-tale palace in 1847 by King Ferdinand, combining Islamic and Medieval elements.
