Kazerma e Cerenit dates back to 1975 when it was built as part of the housing military units of the then-Ministry of Defence (MoD) of the People’s Socialist Republic of Albania (PSRA). It was first called Army Barracks 3700 but its name was changed several times so as to safeguard military secrets held on its grounds. Works for the construction of the Barracks began back in 1968 by digging out the tunnels, and later with the establishment of the logistics base that was required. Prior to that, this property belonged to the state-owned Agricultural Co-operative, where tomatoes were cultivated. Housing the Chinese OQ-2 and OQ-4 rockets, the Barracks were an anonymous unit of the MoD, and the correct number of rockets was never knowingly reported in any inventory of any sort. Therefore, only the Officer in charge, himself a member of the Central Committee of the Party of Labour of Albania, and the Chief of Staff of the PSRA Army knew the exact number and types of military equipment and weapons that were stored in this location. One of the most important tunnels of the Barracks was Tunnel No. 1, from where military vehicles would be filled with fuel. The tunnel had two huge storage tanks with a capacity of 150,000 litres each, which were filled from the tunnel’s ceiling with its two enormous built-in funnels. The Barracks had their own workshop complete with all sorts of equipment and machinery, including cranes, which were used to move heavy military machinery. In 1997, an infamous year in Albania’s modern history, the Barracks were spared any damage thanks to their favourable geographical position. It was almost 30 years later, in 2020, that works commenced to transform the Barracks into an agro-tourism business, that is fervently safeguarding the identity of every single building at the Barracks, whilst displaying some of the rarest military artefacts of the then time.
