In cultures around the world, acorns represent fertility, new life, growth, and good fortune. The seed may be small and unassuming but with the magic of nature, it can grow into mighty and statuesque oak trees, inspiring its association with transformation and new life. Many towns in South Africa have avenues lined with oaks, some dating 400 years in time, standing strong as a reminder of the trees’ resilience throughout history. Despite the tree’s enduring strength, about one third of the world’s oak species are endangered and threatened with extinction. The exterior of an acorn, called the pericarp, is a tough exterior that protects the inside fruit. Similarly, the round shape of the Akin Drum cabin provides a safe space that protects guests from the elements.
